It is hard to believe that we are at the end of the quarter! It has been a fantastic start to our Kindergarten experience! I am looking forward to sharing your child's growth, accomplishments, successes, and progress through a parent/teacher conference. I will be setting up a Sign Up Genius to sign up with your name and your child's name. Conferences will be held from 1:00 - 4:00 pm with 15 minute increments. You will be able to sign up beginning October 3rd. It is my understanding that a link will be sent through my Archway Trivium East email to access and sign up through Sign Up Genius. If this changes I will announce the change during afternoon pick-up and through a notice in your child's red folder. Also, you may sign up to meet with Specials teachers including, Coach Brinson for PE, Mrs. Houlihan for Music, and Ms. Way for Art. The expectation is the conference is for the parents only and not for the children to be present. It will give us an opportunity to discuss academics, behavior, and socialization freely and openly. I am looking very forward to meeting with each family!
After our Fall break students will not be able to wear shorts per our uniform policy. Boys will only be able to wear pants and girls may wear pants or skirts. Pants must be worn with a black belt. Also, it would be helpful for your child to practice tucking in their shirts. Girls may wear tights or socks with their skirts. Our class has been doing a wonderful job of following dress code policies! Thank you families! Reminders:

Singapore math approach helps our Kindergarten scholars to build a strong foundation in mathematics through fun-filled lessons and activities. Scholars are able to actively participate through hands-on tasks and meaningful activities. First, we encounter a concept through the use of manipulatives. Manipulatives may include, counters, linking cubes, number cards, five or ten frames, dice, and many more. Then, we move on to the pictorial stage in which pictures are used to model problems. Last, when students are familiar with the ideas taught, we progress to a more advanced or abstract stage in which only numbers, notations, and symbols are used. Each day our scholars progress through this methodology. We use our practice books to support both our pictorial and abstract learning. I check their work daily, praise their successes, support their misunderstandings, and ask questions to solidify their learning and understanding of the content area.
Our morning routine has changed! Since school began our scholars have entered the classroom, unpacked their belongings, then played with games or puzzles. Scholars are continuing to do this however, we end 5 minutes early to begin morning copy work. Scholars clean up, get a piece of Spalding paper from the tray, sit at seat, take out a pencil, and wait for directions. The first direction is to write their first name on the top line. Next, I write a word on the board and together we identify the sounds and read the whole word. Finally, each scholar writes the word. I walk around checking everyone's paper to ensure each child is forming each letter correctly. Are their letters beginning in the correct position including, top line for tall letters, midpoint for short letters, and at 2 on the clock for clock letters? I also check that each letter sits on the baseline. I will ask for a student to erase and rewrite letters too! This has been very exciting for all our scholars and each has adapted very well to our new routine! Our days have become chillier in the morning! Everyone is so excited about our cooler weather finally. Just as a reminder, only sweaters with the Trivium logo may be worn in the classroom. Jackets/sweaters without the Trivium logo may be worn outside for recess but should not represent pop culture. Also, please label sweaters and jackets with your child's name. Wish List:
Our Specials Schedule: Monday: PE Tuesday: Art Wednesday: PE Thursday: Music Friday: Enrichment Our Spalding Clinic will be Wednesday, September 21st from 6:00 - 7:00pm. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn more about phonograms, Spalding grip, techniques, and the importance of saying and writing our phonograms accurately and precisely. Each week your child will have phonogram homework. As a parent, you will be dictating the phonogram sound and your child will write the phonogram using a Spalding grip. It is important that you are modeling the correct pronunciation of each phonogram. Another great resource to hear the correct pronunciation of our phonograms can be found on the Archway Trivium West website. Once on our school website go to:
Academics Curriculum Phonograms From there you are able to click on each individual phonogram to hear correct pronunciation and to see our method of teaching phonograms. If you ever have a question, concern, or need clarity on phonograms, or homework in general, please don't hesitate to ask I would be more than happy to assist. I have been exceptionally proud of the growth and improvement each of our Kindergarten scholars are making on saying and writing our phonograms. I truly believe a proper pencil grip makes all the difference in correct letter formation and ease of writing. Please encourage this grip while your child is writing whether it be phonograms, math, or history. This week we were able to begin embedding history into our weekly schedule. We learned about North America and three things that can be found in North America including buffalo, corn, and the Statue of Liberty. We did not go into as much depth as I would have liked but we were able to identify on day 2 of our lesson that United States is a country in North America. Also, with some prompting we identified Canada and Mexico too. I will be embedding Science into next week's lessons. My goal is to embed at least 2 days per week alternating weeks between History and Science. Wish List:
Our Specials Schedule: Monday: Music Tuesday: PE Wednesday: Art Thursday: Art Friday: Music Our scholars did an amazing job of reciting Whole Duty of Children by Robert Louis Stevenson. I told the class that each child could choose to recite the poem alone or with a friend in front of the class. I was absolutely amazed by how many scholars chose to recite the poem alone! Everyone, either alone or with a friend, stood in scholarly position, spoke with a loud, clear voice, and recited our poem beautifully! There was so much excitement and sense of accomplishment from each and every scholar! I was very proud and I thank you for working with your child on poem recitation. Our new poem is Rain also by Robert Louis Stevenson and we will recite it at the end of September.
Rain by Robert Louis Stevenson The rain is raining all around, It falls on field and tree, It rains on the umbrellas here, And on the ships at sea. This week I began giving a sticker at the top of your child's daily Spalding writing paper. Each scholar was only given a sticker if there were no extra doodling, drawing, or unrelated pencil marks on his/her paper. It's important for each scholar to understand our writing paper is only used for writing our sounds and words and not for drawing. Our class pictures are going to look amazing! Everyone looked fantastic in their uniforms and did a wonderful job posing for their first school picture! It was a very exciting event for our scholars. Homework will be reviewed daily and a sticker will be placed by the parent signature line if homework is turned in and completed for the day. Homework is graded and it is important for your child to complete his/her homework for review and reinforcement of content taught in our classroom. Homework will be returned in your child's folder on Friday and it may be taken out at home and new homework will be given on Monday. Reminders:
