All of our scholars did an amazing job on their projects and presentations! All scholars demonstrated perseverance to complete their project timely, wisdom to draw a picture and write a sentence to describe their symbol, and courage to present to the many families who visited our classrooms. The costumes were fantastic! We had George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, Abraham Lincoln, Statue of Liberty, and many colorful and creative combinations of red, white, and blue. As teachers we were absolutely amazed at their creativity, confidence, and excitement in presenting their American Symbol projects. Also, thank you parents for your hard work and support in making our Project Night very successful. As always, we couldn't do it without you!
The mastery of 70 phonograms orally is expected at this point in the year. If your child is not at mastery, please spend extra time each night working on this. You can separate your Spalding cards into 3 decks with a combination of the first 26 phonograms and the remainder of phonograms. Choose one deck and go through the deck 1 time and set aside 2 piles. One pile is for the phonograms your child knows accurately and the second pile is for the phonograms your child either needed a prompt to remember or needed to be given the sound. Next, review the second pile orally. As an extra practice say the phonogram sound and have your child write the phonogram. You can use your child's in class Spalding paper to write the phonograms. The next day use a different deck. Every three days your child will practice all 70 phonograms. The amount of phonograms practiced daily will not feel as overwhelming or tiring when using this method. This is the same method we will be doing in class. It is very important that we continue to practice our phonograms orally and written on a daily basis to ensure mastery of all 70 phonograms.

It was a true pleasure meeting with families to discuss your child's growth in Kindergarten during quarter one. We enjoyed conversing with each family and being able to share stories and highlight some of your child's experiences in our classrooms! The amount of commitment, involvement, and caring of your child's education has been absolutely wonderful. We thank you for helping your child with homework, reading each night, asking questions, and being eager to be involved in any way. Your child cannot be successful without you and either can the Kindergarten team!!!
Our field trip will be Wednesday, October 24th to Rocker 7 Family Farm. It will be a wonderful opportunity to have your child learn about seeds, farm animals, sunflowers, pumpkins, honey bees, and corn. Again, you must be fingerprinted to chaperone our field trip and siblings are not allowed. If you are unable to attend the field trip don't fret, there will be another one this year and we promise to give more ample notice. Reading groups will officially begin on Monday, October 29th! If you would like to volunteer please be on the lookout for a signup from your wonderful classroom coordinator. Reading groups are from 7:55 - 8:15. You must have your fingerprints on file to work with children in the classroom and no siblings are allowed during this reading time. We are looking forward to all the growth your child will make as they begin to read! The phonograms we are continuing to practice daily in class are the first 1-26, sh, th, ow, ou, ee, and ar. Please continue to practice daily! We will begin our Pink Spalding notebook next week. Students are very excited to begin writing and reading words! Reminders:
Singapore math approach helps our Kindergarten scholars to build a strong foundation in mathematics through fun-filled lessons and activities. Scholars are able to actively participate through hands-on tasks and meaningful activities. First, we encounter a concept through the use of manipulatives. Manipulatives may include, counters, linking cubes, number cards, five or ten frames, dice, and many more. Then, we move on to the pictorial stage in which pictures are used to model problems. Last, when students are familiar with the ideas taught, we progress to a more advanced or abstract stage in which only numbers, notations, and symbols are used. Each day our scholars progress through this methodology. We use our practice books to support both our pictorial and abstract learning. We check their work daily, praise their successes, support their misunderstandings, and ask questions to solidify their learning and understanding of the content area.

Spalding Clinic will be held Thursday, September 20th 6-7pm at Archway Trivium West. This will be a wonderful opportunity to learn how to correctly do the phonogram cards at home daily with your child. At this time, if your child is having difficulty staying focused or reaching frustration level while saying the sounds or writing the sounds please limit your practice to 10-15 sounds. As your child practices writing the sounds please make sure you are having your child say the sound before and during writing and not saying the letter name. We are focusing on the sounds a letter makes and not the name of the letter. This will be very important as your child begins to read and write words! The sounds we have been learning and practicing in class as of Friday are the first 26 phonograms: a-z. If your child is comfortable practicing all sounds then please continue to do so.
Kindergarten teachers have been exceptionally proud of the growth and improvement each of our Kindergarten scholars are making on saying and writing our phonograms. We truly believe a proper pencil grip makes all the difference in correct letter formation and ease of writing. Please encourage this grip while your child is writing whether it be phonograms, math, or history. Reminders:
Each month your child will be required to learn a poem from our Harp & Laurel book. Last month we enjoyed beautiful recitations of the poem Whole Duty of Children by Robert Louis Stevenson. Our scholars recited the poem in front of the class with a friend. Your child's teacher scored your child based on a 4 point rubric. The grading is as follows:
4 - I recited the poem with feeling and I got all the words right! 3 - I missed one or two words, but I still said it with feeling! 2 - I asked my teacher for help, but I remembered some on my own! 1 - I said it with my teacher, and I can't wait to practice more at home! This rubric is located in your child's poetry folder. Your child's teacher will share your child's poetry folder with you during your Parent/Teacher conference in October. During the first week of the month your child is learning and practicing the poem in class. We recite the poem daily, learn the meaning of each line, and draw a picture which represents the poem. During weeks 2-4 your child is beginning to memorize the poem with your assistance at home. The poem can be found on the newsletter. Please practice the poem daily with your child. September's poem is: Rain by Robert Louis Stevenson The rain is raining all around, It falls on field and tree, It rains on the umbrellas here, And on the ships at sea. Reminders:

These activity book pages can be completed any day of the week but all pages are due on Friday, September 7. Phonograms: Please have your child practice and review the phonograms listed on the newsletter. For next week, please review o, c, a, d, g, f, s, qu, b, e, h, i. These phonograms should be pulled from your deck of phonograms and practiced. Then, continue to pull the new cards every day. On Tuesday, add u to your deck, j,k on Wednesday, l on Thursday, and m,n on Friday. Your child will be tested on the taught phonograms every other week during our bi-weekly assessments. The directions for practicing the phonogram cards is located at the bottom of the newsletter. Writing Phonograms: Please have your child practice writing their phonograms for 10 minutes daily on the provided paper. Next week includes the phonograms a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h. The top line provides a dot of where to begin the phonogram and the second line is to practice independently. All of the phonograms should be completed by Friday. Thank you families for attending our Curriculum Night. It was a pleasure seeing so many parents, presenting our Core Curriculum, and answering many wonderful and insightful questions. If you were unable to attend, please contact your child's teacher for a copy of the handouts given to families.
One of the frequently asked questions was regarding fingerprinting for volunteering in our classrooms and school. We will be having our Finger Printing event on Tuesday, September 18 from 8-10am. Our school is asking for a $20.00 donation and your fingerprints we be valid for three years. If you are unable to attend this event you may also go to Great Hearts Human Resources Department to be fingerprinted. Parents were discussing obtaining fingerprint clearance through the Department of Public Safety however, Great Hearts Academies WILL NOT accept this fingerprint card. Your fingerprints must be taken through either Great Hearts Human Resources or our Fingerprint event in order to volunteer in the classroom, quarter parties, and field trips. We look forward to having all of you as our volunteers throughout the year. Reminders:

Our Kindergartners have demonstrated a tremendous amount of growth within a very short time. We are learning our Spalding phonograms, forming phonograms using Spalding grip, matching objects in Singapore Math, and learning the meaning of our Core Virtues. Today our scholars experienced our first fire drill. All scholars did an amazing job following our fire drill procedures including walking in straight quiet lines, voices off for the entire fire drill, and not screaming when the initial sound of the alarm roars above them.
Our Kindergartners are also demonstrating our Virtue of Responsibility by walking to their classroom each morning upon entering our building. Beginning Monday, August 20th scholars will be walking to their classrooms independently but with the guidance and direction of staff members. Teachers will no longer be holding hands with a Kindergartner and walking them directly to his/her classroom. Instead teachers will be positioned strategically along the walking path to continue guiding and ensuring that each child reaches his/her classroom. Also, Teacher Assistants will be standing at the classroom doorways to guide and welcome each scholar into our classrooms. Thank you in advance for all your support and encouragement as we implement this new procedure on Monday. Spalding homework will begin Tuesday, September 4th however, we have decided to send home math homework beginning Monday, August 20th. Scholars will be given a homework assignment sheet detailing their assignments. Each child will continue to practice his/her name three times daily along with completing a lesson in his/her Singapore Activity Book. Please return all homework daily so it may be checked in for completion. Our scholars are very excited to have homework! Reminders:

We have had a fantastic week in KA, KB, and KC!! All of our scholars are becoming familiar with our procedure and expectations, forming friendships, and learning and practicing our Core Virtues!
Reminders: Red folders: Please return daily to school. Also, please remove items on the stay home side daily. Consumable books: Over the next two weeks we will be sending home with your child a list of missing materials including Singapore Textbooks and Activity books, Spalding Pink Notebooks, and Literature books. The book deposit paid to ATE is for textbooks used in the classroom each year. Each year your scholar will be expected to purchase additional materials including, literature books, Spalding materials, and Singapore books along with school supplies. Water Bottles: Please send a water bottle with your child daily. Water bottles should be filled with water only, please no juice or sports drinks. No peanut products: We have many scholars with peanut allergies so please do not send items with peanuts, peanut butter, or nuts. Uniforms: Please refer to the Student Handbook and this week's Athenian Echo for proper uniform attire. The dress code violations we are noticing most often include shoes, socks, and belts. Shoes must be athletic shoes and all black or all white. Socks must be above the ankle and not below or at the ankle. Pants and shorts must have a belt. We know this can be a difficult task in Kindergarten. There are velcro and magnetic belts for those who struggle with buckling a belt. Pick Up: 11:25 for Half Day Kindergarten 2:50 for Full Day Kindergarten with no older siblings at our school. 3:10 for Full Day Kindergarten with siblings at our school only. Reminders:
