Wishing you a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends! Enjoy the holiday weekend filled with delicious food, possible shopping, and relaxing with your family. I know I always look forward to a scrumptious turkey dinner with stuffing, mashed potatoes, butternut squash, and turnip! Even though I love to shop I never brave the crowds on Black Friday so, I will enjoy my Friday by sleeping in and doing something fun with my family.
Thank you to everyone for making my first year at Archway Trivium East such an exciting experience. I am very thankful for my fantastic scholars as well as my wonderful and supportive parents. I am truly blessed and thankful each day! Happy Thanksgiving!!! Reminders:

Today several Little Red Riding Hoods entered our classroom of learning followed by a couple of persevering tortoises, four courageous lions, a whimsical mouse, along with a precious dog named Shadow. Not far behind, Momotaro showed up standing tall with courage accompanied by a fierce hunter and the beautiful Goddess of Sun. Our adorable Gingerbread Girl ran as fast as she could to our classroom ready to share all she knows about our core virtues of friendship and responsibility. It was a wonderful opportunity for everyone to experience being a literary character full of imagination and wonder! Also, lots of high fives to a group of very creative and crafty parents!
We will begin to recite our poem Singing after Thanksgiving break. This poem is much longer than our previous poems and you child may be struggling with memorizing the entire poem so, try to practice one line at a time until fully memorized. Have your child repeat the line several times and when he/she is successful then add another line. If you continue this strategy your child should be able to memorize the entire poem successfully. Just as a friendly reminder students may only wear jackets or sweaters with our ATE patch inside our classroom. However, your child may wear an additional coat outside as our weather gets colder. Please make sure all jackets and sweaters are labeled with your child's name. Reminders:
Our Specials Schedule: Monday: PE Tuesday: Art Wednesday: PE Thursday: Happy Thanksgiving! Friday: Enjoy your time with your family! "Guided reading is small-group reading instruction designed to provide differentiated teaching that supports students in developing reading proficiency. The teacher uses a tightly structured framework that allows for the incorporation of several research-based approaches into a coordinated whole. For the student, the guided reading lesson means reading and talking (and sometimes writing) about an interesting and engaging variety of fiction and nonfiction texts. For the teacher, guided reading means taking the opportunity for careful text selection and intentional and intensive teaching of systems of strategic activity for proficient reading." (Fountas & Pinnell, 1996).
As a teacher, it is my goal to provide "differentiated teaching that supports our students in developing reading proficiency". In order to achieve this goal, I need to assess students to determine strengths and weaknesses, select text that a student will be able to process successfully with instruction, and group students based on need. Therefore, I have decided to restructure my guided reading groups and the time of day we have reading groups. To accomplish this goal I will be collecting all book bags on Monday and together as a class we will explore what a reading group looks and sounds like. I will be modeling my expectations for in class and at home practice. During the next week your child will come home with a new book bag. I will send home a letter stating what is in the book bag and how to support your child at home. You may see your child come home with a book he/she previously had and read with success but, I ask that you be patient as we reorganize and restructure our guided reading time. For homework, read a book of choice from your home library. If you have any questions please don't hesitate to ask. Thank you to all my volunteers who have been assisting with reading groups! We appreciate it very much and you will be called upon again to help our scholars with reading! Reminders:
Our Specials Schedule: Monday: Music Tuesday: PE Wednesday: Music Thursday: Art Friday: Music I cannot believe it is already the first week of November! We have been in school for 3 months and we have learned a great deal! As I was assessing our scholars for our Bi-Weekly 12 test I realized how our scholars are like sponges soaking up knowledge and always seeking to learn more. We are counting to 40 with fluency using body motions, saying 38 phonograms quickly and accurately, and demonstrating an eagerness to read by sharing decoding and comprehension skills. Sometimes your child may show frustration or are reluctant to do their homework, but just encourage your child to persevere and each will succeed because I truly believe that every child is capable of success, no exceptions!!!
Speaking of phonograms, all of the phonograms we have learned in class are on the Bi-Weekly 12 assessment. Also, this week we learned Her first nurse works early! er - her ir - first ur - nurse wor - works ear - early Ask you child to demonstrate the hand motions that go along with our phonograms. If they can't remember them we will be practicing all next week too!! Our Unit 4 math assessment will be next Thursday, November 10th. We have been ordering numbers in ascending (counting up) and descending (counting back) order. To help your child prepare for the test create an order of numbers leaving some blanks for your child to fill in. For example: 1, 2, ___, 4, ___, 6, ____, ____, 9, ___ 10, 9, ___, 7, ___, ___, 4, 3, ___, ___ Also, next week's homework will include lesson 4.3 and 4.4 in our Singapore Activity books and this will be a wonderful review for all our scholars. Our next unit will be shapes! We will identify cubes, cones, rectangular blocks, spheres, and cylinders. Wish List:
